Cloak
November 11, 2007
I have finished my latest work. I have decided to keep the title simple, one or two words. Titles are important for the overall body of work I am planning for the next year. The title I have chosen is Cloak. When I was working on the piece I felt the human figure was evident in the structure. The surface of the paint has a worn almost woven quality.
The colours are dark and dependent on close scrutiny by the viewer. As the viewer looks closer at the surface the richer the colours will appear. During the day the painting will change as the light conditions change. The painting will be cloaked by light so to speak.
The Complete Dictionary of Symbols describes Cloak as follows.
“Power, protection, separation, concealment, metamorphosis, a diversity of symbolism related to the swiftness with which a cloak can change or hide the form. They were an emblem of royalty, brotherhood, or separation from a material world, as in some monastic orders. They could also be an emblem of divine protection. Alternatively the cloak stands for intrigue, for example the ‘cloak and dagger’ world of espionage.
“Magic cloaks appear often in Germanic and Celtic legends, particularly Irish; and most recently the magic cloak of the Harry Potter series; they are associated with special powers of invisibility and forgetfulness.”

Just saying hello from CLOAK Inc. Love what you’ve described here.
We have a pretty similar description for why we named our company CLOAK:
CLOAK is boldly demure, unusually familiar, subtly challenging. We are all about creating unexpected and exceptionally stylish pieces that embrace social issues. Our designs are not mass produced so you will truly have a unique piece of wearable art.
A CLOAK may be anything that disguises or conceals. It is on one hand a symbol of superior dignity and on the other, a veil which cuts off from the world. It covers or shields. It is about metamorphosis, evolution, revolution. A cloak is an emblem of divine protection. CLOAK is an action and a noun. It is dual-sided, multi-faceted and ever-changing. We are style with a conscious. Design with purpose. Form with function. We are CLOAK.
We are committed to improving the quality of life for all people around the world. A portion, and in some cases all, of our profits will be used for special missions work such as feeding and CLOAK-ing poverty stricken nations.
