Thick or thin?

Each Monday I start work on a 16×20 inch canvas. I will use social media to ask questions to guide the development of the painting.
Tomorrow I’m starting my week 5 painting. The question to get the painting started is. Thick or thin?

January 29, 2012.

It’s a light filled day in my studio. The sky is clear, and there is snow on the ground, and light is bouncing off everything. A good day to get something done.

#1012.

This painting has a layer of mylar on top, and I really like the effect of looking through layers of marks and images. I use certain marks and motifs and I have in effect made them my own, but I feel I need to expand my mark making and find new ways of drawing.

I went through a stack of paintings today and decided that three were done. I call this signing off. I usually sign the back, date the painting, and enter the information in a ledger. There’s always a satisfying feeling to declaring a painting done. Then I usually lean then against the wall.

Though the Long Series are all 12×12 inches, I often allow the edges to be uneven or ragged, and I’m not concerned if they are not perfectly square. The left edge of this one has a pronounced curve, and the over all piece is built out of two pieces of paper that I glued together.

Saturday is a day of errands and chores, but I do intend to get some painting done. Maybe. Hopefully.

I’ve had a good morning working while I wait for various bits of paint to dry. Who says artist don’t have exciting lives.

I’m exploring broken fragments of graphs. Irregular edges are another favorite that I keep working with.

Long Series #1009.

The grid is endless, and sometimes it can be broken, buried, or erased.

January 26, 2012.

I’ve not started work yet, and I wonder what kind of fun I’ll get up to. Anyway it is a sunny, cold, Canadian morning, and January is fast slipping away.
