An introduction can be a wonderful thing. You can meet interesting people, and make new friends. You can be introduced to your new favorite foods, books, music, or artist.

I’d like to introduce you to some of my favorite artists. Some of whom I’ve been familiar with for years, and other I’ve only recently been introduced to.

The person I’d like to introduce is the Halifax, Nova Scotia artist Ruth Marsh.

Bee Taxidermy.

Artist Statement

“In recent years my work has dealt with loss, absence and longing in the context of living creatures and the natural world. Bees in particular have held prominence, first as a symbol of warning and mediation and later as a representation of the magical/spiritual transformation from living creature to holy relic. Fulfilling all of these roles, bees have formed the thematic “connective tissue” of my work, giving my practice its united direction; this manifests most specifically in the poetic narratives surrounding their disappearance.

The recent, ongoing series, Bee Taxidermy is both a monument to missing bees and an artist’s attempt to put humpty dumpty back together again. A call has been sent out across Canada for members of the public to mail found dead bees to the project. Once requested, a participant will receive a “bee kit” in the mail which includes a small container for the bee, a set of instructions, a brief questionnaire and a small, original drawing in exchange for their efforts. So far hundreds of bees have been received and it is an ongoing effort to repair and preserve each one.”

“A viewer might be attracted to the bees by their diminutive scale and lean in for a closer look only to notice that the bees have not only been preserved but also meticulously and lovingly repaired. What the viewer finds instead is an unfaithful copy, a simulacrum; parts that were missing have been replaced with objects of a similar scale. Sections of legs have been carefully replaced with electrical resistors, jewelry parts and wire. Missing sections have been resurfaced with soft velvet and rabbit fur. Discarded and reused materials make up for what is missing. The result is what Jean Baudrillard might consider “a perversion of reality”. After completing this process the bees are representative of, yet no longer members of, the natural order of things and what is felt is not so much that something has been preserved but more that it has been irrevocably lost.”

“The Bee Taxidermy series has also incorporated video and performance to further encourage community involvement. The Instructional video “Bee Taxidermy: A How To Guide” is presented to the public to encourage them to take on bee preservation. In the performance “Bee Warning and Memorialization Walking Tours” participants were encouraged to identify areas hazardous to bees and leave small printed warning signs for them. If a dead bee was found on a tour, a small memorial sign was left. In all aspects the Bee Taxidermy series attempts to use humor and community engagement to open up a dialogue about ecological disaster.”

I’d like to introduce you to some of my favorite artists. Some of whom I’ve been familiar with for years, and other I’ve only recently been introduced to.

The person I’d like to introduce is the artist Mary Judge.

“Most of Judge’s work is driven by what happens in drawing, but she makes works on canvas, sculpture and prints as well as drawing works on paper. she has used powered pigment for years and incorporates a renaissance technique of the “spolvero” meaning dust, or pounced stencil.

Judge’s work is about transformation through repetition. it employs an underlying geometric structure and explores the possibility of the emotive power of reductive forms deployed through repetition and symmetry.” a+i

I’d like to introduce you to some of my favorite artists. Some of whom I’ve been familiar with for years, and other I’ve only recently been introduced to.

The artist I’d like to introduce is the Painter EC.

Artist Statement:

“I think there is a process going on internally that is not readily described with words. I suppose part of my work has always been about a struggle between verbal language with the ‘life’ of painting (and experience) and the problems of expressing something. Painting is a non verbal way of thinking and it operates in it’s own kind of space or gap. Perhaps it ‘exploits silence’.

For me painting can be about finding out about what I do not know – or don’t realise I know! Unconscious material filters into working practice and I must leave myself open so that these influences may surface. There are layers of paint (as there are layers of meaning) but I like to leave it open to the viewer rather than direct them. That’s also why most of my work is untitled.

I’d say that my practice is multifarious. I explore the relationships between many things that interest me: physical and psychological space, psychoanalytical theories of the Psyche (soul) and the Unconscious mind, Order/Disorder, physics, natural form, verbal language, the language of the unconscious and the linguistics of painting.

I sometimes start by writing on the canvas using automatic writing. At others times more conscious and deliberate words. These words might get obliterated or become part of the work visually (their literal meanings are not necessarily important). Layers get lost or come through to the next. So I must be OK with the loss of something to find something out. I encourage chaos, allowing an organic growth through free association. Acutally, I often need to overthrow it all and push it over if it is looking too comfortable. Perhaps I can leave a painting hovering in a place that is neither ordered nor chaotic.

Duality is ever present and this is not necessarily a conflict but something that forms something integral and vital. For me it is important to recognise and work with both sides of many coins! – The rational and irrational, subjective and objective, conscious and unconscious, order and chaos, the seen and unseen etc. I think that conflict itself makes for creative tension.”

“The initial point of my paintings is the drawing. The sensibly captured motives and thoughts in sketch-book are consequently developed and combined in bigger scale on the canvas, while the whole process is taken on a tape so I can manipulate or revert the whole picture and blend the newly created motives into the old ones – it is after then when the paintings get their specific character. The surprise of completely new motives and connections thrills me. It is this moment of surprise that shapes and bends the work to its final stage, when the painting often leaves the initial sketch.” TB
