I was looking through an old portfolio in my studio when I found this watercolour on paper from 1985.
What is surprising to me is that this painting has a comet in it, and I still paint comets. Some traits, and themes that an artist acquires early last forever it seems. I’ve often tried to change the form, and content of my work, and yet I still find things even in my most abstract work that originate in some of my earliest pieces. Colour would be the most obvious example. I really love a bright red.
I remember well the return of Halley’s comet that year. It was unspectacular to say the least. I was hoping for a picture perfect comet in the night sky, and at best it was a fuzzy little smudge.
