Storage box for 12×12 inch Long series.

I think of this Long Series that I’m working on, as one big artwork with 1000 parts, and an important part of the series are these storage boxes that I’m placing the paintings in. The boxes are a Martha Stewart product that are for storing 12×12 inch paper. I discovered them after I had completed the first 30 paintings in the series. I now have 11 boxes full of paintings.

I’m still considering ways to display the paintings. A selection will be on the walls, but most will be left in the boxes. The boxes will probably be on a table with the lids open.

Another extreme option that I could do later would be just to leave everything in the boxes, and keep the lids closed. A series of 1000 paintings is too large for the mind to retain. You start off looking at them, and you might see ones you really like, but ofter 300 you can’t really remember what you had seen earlier. After looking at 1000 you can’t remember any of them. By keeping the lids closed, the idea of 1000 paintings would be the artwork.

But the best visual experience is to look at a stack of them in the boxes. The boxes are beautiful, and when the paintings are stacked in the boxes, the edges of the paintings create another painting, with interesting colours, and textures of it’s own.
