The Replacement Series.

Now that my Long Series is finished I find I still have a few things to do before I can exhibit the series. One question that has been in the back of my mind is what do I do when I sell one of the paintings? In the course of working on the series I have already sold a few of the paintings, and a quick count shows that I’ve sold 18.

Replacement Series.

Replacement Series.

So I’m doing replacement paintings to bring the number of paintings that will be exhibited back to 1000. I’ve been thinking that each time I sell a painting I will do a replacement that will be placed in the numerical sequence of the painting sold, and it will say replacement #1, replacement #2, and so on until I do 1000 replacements.

Order in chaos.

The other thing I’ve noticed is how many 12×12 inch paintings I have in various stages of completion. These will be used in the replacement series, but I’ve also started reconfiguring some into 11.5×16 inch sheets. Why? Well I have a box this size, and I figured I may as well start another project and fill the box with paintings. I’ve come to realize that one of the things that interests me in the work I’ve been doing are the ideas of endurance, and containment. The endurance part is the challenge of setting a big goal, and doing a 1000 paintings in a set size, and the containment part is filling a box with paintings and then thinking of the end result as one piece with many parts.
