  1. I had to find out and Googled it too. Here’s a bit of what I found. I was surprised to see Canada has led the avant-garde for 3 short periods of time (unlike Australia with none). The young and innovative Montreal Automatistes revolutionized painting in the 1940s. The group of painters, dancers and writers—led by Paul-Émile Borduas and inspired by the Surrealists—found freedom of expression in abstraction pursued through automatism… an instinctive, unpremeditated form of creating art (also influenced Jackson Pollock).
