Clay Smith was born in Hull in 1974. Now living and working in Central England, Clay has been concentrating his attention Internationally as well as nationally.  A series of Clay’s recent work ‘The Dystopian Family’ will be included in Format13, Format EXPOSURE in 2013.

Clay states…

“I document found photographic subjects, to experiment with the idea of cultural identities and integration. Being images of war, glamour and landscapes(all that are changeable).  My aim is to juxtapose these images to make a balanced image that aesthetically works, using images that conflict, that can seem not to work(this relates to our times of cultural integration).  Two subjects that do not and haven’t shared the same space or culture, and putting them together to share a space, giving them a new lease of life.  The purpose for some of my work is to illustrate the importance of Cultural Integration.  To create an altogether different space for the two to live, and share.  This makes for an uncomfortable and surreal image, but the outcome is something for which the viewer can identify and engage with.”
