Introductions can be wonderful things. You can meet interesting people, and make new friends through an introduction. Sometimes you can be introduced to your new favorite food, television show, or artist. I’d like to introduce you to some of my favorite artists.

The artist I’d like to introduce is the painter, curator, and arts organizer, Julie Torres.

Christmas Paintcation, Acrylic on Paper, December 2011.

Julie Torres is a Brooklyn-based Painter and Curator, frequently exhibiting and organizing shows in the Bushwick/Ridgewood area. Torres’ work has been featured at New York Center for Art and Media Studies (New York, NY), Index Art Center (Newark, NJ), and in a collaborative art-making event that she led at Heiner Contemporary (DC). In 2012, Torres enjoyed three solo installations: Close Encounters at the Riverside Art Museum in Riverside, CA; Bold As Love at Taller Boricua Art Space in East Harlem; and Ghost in the Machine at Storefront Bushwick Gallery in Brooklyn. She is thrilled to reunite the international painting collective she assembled for Bushwick Open Studios 2012 in two concurrent shows opening May 2013: What I Like About You at Parallel Art Space in Ridgewood Queens; and What I Like About You, North at Imogen Holloway Gallery in Saugerties, NY.

recent artist statement:
“I seek spontaneity and unexpected outcomes, and try not think too much while I’m working. These days I mostly draw and paint with pencils and acrylics on paper, cardboard and wood panel.I like exploring the area between what’s blatant and what’s suggested, and enjoy work that is secretive, unclear and perhaps a little confusing to the viewer.”
