Have you met…Gert Scheerlinck?

An introduction can be a wonderful thing. You can meet interesting people, and make new friends. You can be introduced to your new favorite foods, books, music, or artist.

I’d like to introduce you to some of my favorite artists. Some of whom I’ve been familiar with for years, and others I’ve only recently been introduced to.

The person I’d like to introduce is the artist Gert Scheerlinck.

BIO

“I am a visual artist who works on the study of matter. My focus is on the use of found materials. Although I still feel the need to return to mixed media on canvas, I mainly study the influence of paint on non-artistic materials such as … rubber, plastic, styrofoam, and rope, … I deliberately paint inaccurately and make intentional (compositional) faults, causing some tension, it creates a correlation between the applied and the used materials.” GS

“My recent work is about a project called ‘reflections’.
(synonyms reflection: glow, contemplation, mirroring, thoughts, … )

Reflection in a literal sense refers to the reflection of light. Light is actually the most important element in art, without light there’s no image.
Reflection refers figuratively to a consideration, a review of performance. A reference to my completion of 10 years of academic studies.
During this project I imposed upon myself some limitations, because there is no coherence between the work without it and also I had to examine the possibilities within this limitation.

1. Reflection (see explanation above).
2. the specific use of material.
3. the use of blue.
4. the techniques I’ve learned over the past years.

I started to paint on cd-cases, they are made of hard shiny plastic (ref. reflection). In these works it clearly comes to the choice of materials and the color blue is evident. Because the paint had to remain in it’s place, I needed to paint on the back, mirrorwise. My restrictions were fulfilled. All cases have a story to tell, but the viewer will be forced to think and formulate his own philosophy.” GS

Gert Scheerlink is a Belgian artist, and he was born in Ninove, Belgium, in 1973. He lived for almost 10 years in Aalst and is now living and working in the smal town of Oosterzel, near Gent.
