This is a piece for a Sesquicentennial Public Art commission I’m working on for the Prince Edward Island Council of the Arts. There will be 25 paintings in the group, and I’m getting close to completing the painting part of the project. Just three more to go!
An introduction can be a wonderful thing. You can meet interesting people, and make new friends. You can be introduced to your new favorite foods, books, music, or artist.
I’d like to introduce you to some of my favorite artists. Some of whom I’ve been familiar with for years, and others I’ve only recently been introduced to.
The person I’d like to introduce is the artist Jeffrey Cortland Jones.
“Jeffrey Cortland Jones is a painter based in Cincinnati, Ohio and a native of East Tennessee. He received his MFA in painting from the University of Cincinnati in 2000 and his BFA in painting from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga in 1998.
Jeffrey is an Associate Professor at the University of Dayton where he is the head of the Painting program. He is represented by Kathryn Markel Fine Arts, New York and Phyllis Weston Gallery, Cincinnati, Ohio.”
“Jeffrey Cortland Jones describes painting as a physical activity and a material practice, rather than a narrative tool. Jones used to paint large and graphic works using big brushes and latex house paint and tar, but transformed his practice after encountering the work of Anselm Kiefer. He has since used his medium to explore optical changes that occur between subtly different hues, opacity and transparency, matte and glossy surfaces, and warm and cool tones. His most iconic works feature strong geometric compositions, and light colors—for this, he has jokingly acquired the reputation of being a painter who paints white. Jones also extends his studio practice to the street, where he paints large-scale versions of his color block explorations.”
