“Rachael Macarthur’s paintings are about dreams and memories, whether childhood reminiscences or her thoughts now. She charts her own personal mythology and history through painting and drawing. Her work fulfills an urgent need to record and remember the past. She is not interested in accurately recording memories; since memory is unreliable- her work plays on an awkward attempt at memory recall, a need for storytelling:
For me, painting can be about the littlest things, an eyelash, a tear, a wish.
It can also be about the biggest things in the world.
It is recording and remembering things you cannot keep.
It is about letting go and forgetting.”

“I make paintings and drawings. I usually use oil paint, but sometimes tempera, mostly on panel. They are abstract, but for me always contain a certain figurative reading. A geometric grid in a painting may be derived from the textile of a shirt, or an outline of a landscape. My paintings work through an understanding of abstraction, specifically in the context of European and mid century American painting.”AG from (standard) INTERVIEW

“Making works within the vernacular of painting but using the materials in alternative ways, I aim to stretch and prod at the boundaries of what painting is perceived to be and challenge its conventions. Using base actions such as mark making, cutting, folding, carving, balancing, stretching and stitching, I want to make seductive works that engage both myself and viewers in a physical and material response, rather than a response to image. As a society we have become extremely adept and accustomed to reading an image instantaneously. I think the excitement in opening painting up to physicality lies in the potential tension with the accepted traditions of what painting is understood to be, and creating a viewing experience of painting that engages all of the sense, not just sight.

Within the body of work there are other themes I engage with. I’m taken with the possibility of an object to contain within both the strong and fragile, the bold and subtle, the hard and soft and the solid and teetering. These dualities are played with by use of material, colour and form.” AM

Statement

“Through painting, drawing, collage and construction my current work develops an ongoing interest in visual perception where foregrounds and backgrounds hold an ambiguous relationship to create certain levels of flatness. By simplifying images into shapes, flat fields of colour and areas of mark making, an image is pushed towards the unrecognizable. Limited information is used to communicate scenes which are both simple and complicated bordering between representation and abstraction. Materials, shape and colour are pared down to a minimum.
My subject matter is sourced from found objects and images chosen for shape, as well as my surrounding environment which is recorded through observational drawing and photography. Spaces and objects become ambiguous inviting the viewer to reassess familiar surroundings. The availability of this resource, shape, colour and negative space, is one that I celebrate.” MR
