An introduction can be a wonderful thing. You can meet interesting people, and make new friends. You can be introduced to your new favorite foods, books, music, or artist.

I’d like to introduce you to some of my favorite artists. Some of whom I’ve been familiar with for years, and others I’ve only recently been introduced to.

The person I’d like to introduce is the artist Judith Farr.

Judith Farr (London, 1981) expresses herself through her paintings; a few years ago she started making abstract investigations so as to develop her own visual language. This year she’s begun an MFA at the Open College for the Arts (UK) in order to continue exploring and expanding on her practice. She uses a combination of automatic drawing, colour, patterns and textures to explore her subconscious, often with a touch of humour.

‘I use my subconscious to investigate painting and drawing, it acts as a narrative that allows me to create images. I try to break my own self imposed rules and surprise myself. I explore the conflict between the need to control an outcome and the desire to let go, and therein I find the unexpected.’

She is currently living in Catalonia, Spain with her partner and daughter.

Artist Statement – Lisa Denyer

“As a painter, Lisa Denyer’s interest lies predominantly within the materiality of the medium itself.

Exploring form through a complete stripping down to elemental components, incidental details such as light reflecting, shadow, and negative space are often sources of inspiration.

The fundamental aspects of Denyer’s early work; landscape, escapism and Romanticism, are still apparent in her current practice. However, these now manifest in highly abstracted representations, and a desire to capture the sublime through simple shape and use of colour.

Prevalent themes in her work include geological structures, natural influences, microcosm and macrocosm.”

Statement

“This year signals a new phase in my practice; a loosening up and a change of pace. An increased awareness of tools and materials, of continuous movement, acting without thinking, forgetting instead of remembering. Cutting, arranging, placing, sticking, drawing, painting. Back to basics. Its difficult not to refer to this activity as ‘mapping’ because the results seem always to resemble a diagram. A diagram is an abstract and universally recognized pictorial way of delivering detailed information or instructions. It conveys not only the essence of true meaning but hints at much more. A personal definition of this activity is that it is a kind of choreographed cartography that is an arrangement of  simple shapes, that builds an abstract narrative in the plan view. In the end experience, emotion and sensation, are gradually compressed into the format of a colour coded map. The best looked for outcome is a configuration that stops your mind working, because you don’t know what to think. You can only feel.” RP
