An introduction can be a wonderful thing. You can meet interesting people, and make new friends. You can be introduced to your new favorite foods, books, music, or artist.

I’d like to introduce you to some of my favorite artists. Some of whom I’ve been familiar with for years, and others I’ve only recently been introduced to.

The person I’d like to introduce is the artist Yevgeniya Baras.

Statement

“I make paintings which are portrait size and heavily textured. I often begin a painting by weaving canvas, layering papier-mâché, sewing patterns, gluing materials such as glass, foil, and paper onto surface, cutting and ripping canvas before I begin the application of oil  paint. By employing typically feminine techniques such as knitting and crocheting as a  part of my painting practice,  I challenge the accepted notions of ornamentation and domesticity.  I employ these traditional tools in a messy, often aggressive, unruly way. Layering, the presence of history of all that has been done to the surface is crucial to the work. Paintings are constructed slowly over time, considered, reworked, encrusted. They talk about an uneasy kind of beauty .
Canvases evoke the body (skin, scars, crust, wounds, infections).  Encountering their surface one encounters bodies that have been affected and wear the scarring.” YB
