Interestingly, there’s an exhibition at the AGA on the Automatistes just now … Canada’s claim to avant-garde fame!

I’d heard about a show at the AGA. Should be great. I wonder if it will travel?

I had to find out and Googled it too. Here’s a bit of what I found. I was surprised to see Canada has led the avant-garde for 3 short periods of time (unlike Australia with none). The young and innovative Montreal Automatistes revolutionized painting in the 1940s. The group of painters, dancers and writers—led by Paul-Émile Borduas and inspired by the Surrealists—found freedom of expression in abstraction pursued through automatism… an instinctive, unpremeditated form of creating art (also influenced Jackson Pollock).

They were an interesting group, and Boruas was a great painter. they are probably best know for the manifesto Refus Global. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Refus_global
